Especially in the last four to five months, I asked myself the following question over and over again:

“Who are those business bloggers and what is there role in their industry or business?”

Since I work in the Internet industry, especially in the web 2.0 application area, I read quite a bunch of interesting blogs. Most of them report ex post about things, that have happened in the near past. For example deutsche-startups.de is a nice news aggregator for the German web 2.0 scene. There are special interest blogs like bazaarblog.com who serve as a evangelizing corporate blog on a narrow topic or self marketing blogs of various technology or method consultants. Those guys act as catalysts, sparring partners or idea distribution providers across the Atlantic and often write about the things they encountered in one or more client sessions.

All these blogs offer well written insights or overviews over more or less open information or opinions. But is there something like an executive blogger out there? A manager who writes about the really interesting things, he is working on? A guy who is in charge of a company, product or strategy? Someone who has responsibility for people, money and the future of his “baby”?

I believe not!

I came to this point, because over and over again I had some ideas for articles I did not write due to the fact that the topics and especially solutions are confidential and crucial to the success of the projects and companies I am working on. Things that are not “open source” or “public domain”. If I just travelled from workshop to workshop and convention to convention, blogging about my ideas and business issues would be a great and fascination thing, especially in the time waiting in airport lounges.

In my case, I need to keep them and use the waiting times talking to my team members, business partners and work on strategic details … and I like that!

A few days ago, while building and tuning a board presentation, I was searching for a metaphor. One that describes the options players have on a market, especially in fast changing ones. Mainstream market trends can be seen as weather – it is just there. You cannot change it!

If it is freezing cold outside you just have the option to adapt and wear your warm parka or to freeze and maybe die. If a hurricane approaches you just can close the windows and nail them because otherwise there won’t be anything left of the windows. It just does not matter if you like wooden boards in front of your house.

So I found my metaphor: “Google and Amazon are like weather”! They are just out there, they affect anybody in the Internet business and that won’t change for a while. So either you find a strategy that is successful in a world with Google and Amazon or you will just fail! Period!

Company and product strategy in the long term has some commonalities with poker as well. You can’t change the cards you are dealt. You just can decide how you play them. Do you raise (invest), check (wait for the right moment or hint) or fold (exit). The latter is very often no matter of discussion because of many most personal reasons. In fact knowing when to fold and really doing that is possibly the most important competence of a poker player (manager).

Back to the weather. Many people do not like Google or even fear it. That is completely natural. I like sun much more than rain, too. But if i were a farmer I would chose an area with rain rather than without or if my soil is too dry, I would build an irrigation system. In that case I am dependent on the one supplying the water.

Most decisions are about the better or less harmful choice. It is not a wishing game. So either you find a good niche in the Amazon and Google world or exit. Face it and put away any animosities, unless you are a real rainmaker!

In den letzten Tagen bin ich mehrfach auf das Thema Bildung und Wissen gestoßen. Unter anderem fragte mich eine Freundin um einen Rat zum Thema Bewerbung und Karriere. Dabei ging um in der Vergangenheit erlernte Software-Produkte, heutige Technologien und die Frage, in welchen Arbeitsmarktsegmenten welche Chancen bestünden. Dabei stellte ich mir die Frage, nach welchen Fähigkeiten und Eigenschaften von Bewerbern ich heute auswähle und in Zukunft rekrutieren würde.

Wir leben in Europa zum größten Teil in Dienstleistungsgesellschaften, in denen qualifizierte Tätigkeiten gefragt sind. Nur diese erwirtschaften ausreichend Wertschöpfung, um unseren sehr hohen Lebensstandard finanzieren zu können. Dazu ist meist umfassendes Fachwissen gefragt. Gleichzeitig nimmt der Fortschritt immer weiter zu. Nicht nur, dass das Wissen an sich immer größer wird, gleichzeitig nimmt auch die Geschwindigkeit zu, mit der sich der Wissensschatz vermehrt.

Vor ein paar Wochen war es einmal wieder so weit – ein Projekt kam aufgrund höherer Gewalt in einen Ressourcen-Engpass. In diesen Fällen hilft nichts besser, als jeden einzelnen Bestandteil auf Herz und Nieren und vor allem auf seine Notwendigkeit hin zu überprüfen. Einfach mehr Ressourcen auf ein Projekt zu setzen, sollte nicht das Mittel der ersten Wahl sein, selbst wenn diese zur Verfügung stehen.

Langzeitprojekte neigen allzu gern zu einer gewissen “Beleibtheit”. Sie werden immer umfangreicher. Da hat der Eine noch diese Idee, ein Anderer wollte schon immer sein Lieblingsfeature haben und ganz Andere denken, dass der Kunde diese Funktion auf jeden Fall braucht.

Ganz SCHLECHT!

Schlank ist sexy! Ich meine nicht dürr, ich meine wohl geformt und auf das essentiellste konzentriert. Man sollte sich ein Projekt immer als Rennwagen vorstellen. Alles, was ihm hilft, schneller, standfester und zuverlässiger zu werden, ist gut. Alles andere nicht!

Sie sind nun schon eine ganze Weile her – die frühen Neunziger Jahre. Es begab sich zu der Zeit, dass sich ein paar junge, dynamische und kreative Köpfe aufmachten Firmen zu gründen. Firmen mit Produkten und Ideen, von denen noch nie ein Mensch zuvor gehört hatte. Das alles nannte man dann ebenso jung und frisch „New Economy“, gab ihr einen eigenen Aktienmarkt (Neuer Markt) und schon konnte das goldene Zeitalter der Internet-Start-ups beginnen.

Leider hatten viele dieser Firmen kein fundiertes Business Modell. Gleichzeitig waren Investoren von einer nie da gewesenen Euphorie beseelt und so bildete sich eine der bekanntesten Blasen der Geschichte. Besonders weil sich zu eben dieser Zeit viele private Kleinaktionäre am scheinbar unbegrenzt wachsenden Aktienmarkt versuchten, war der Aufschrei beim Crash im Jahr 2000 besonders groß und vor allem breit. Unglaubliche Summen an Ersparnissen und Privatvermögen wurden über Nacht vernichtet. Im Zuge der geplatzten Balse wurde der Neue Markt samt Index sofort wieder beerdigt. Das Handelsblatt veröffentlichte sogar eine Todesanzeige zu Ehren des NEMAX.
Nur eine Hand voll Start-ups überlebte diese Marktbereinigung. Entweder hatten sie bereits ein funktionierendes Geschäftsmodell, überlegten sich schnell eines oder hatten genügend Kapital in der Hinterhand, um die Krise zu überleben. Um diese Überlebenden geht es hier.
